history

The castle was mentioned for the first time in 1035 in a document from the Farfa monastery under the name Castrum Vetus de Ophiano . In 1092 the area around the castle came to the mighty Farfa Abbey together with the neighboring Castrum Antoni (today ruins on Monte Antuni). However, both castles were probably built in the 10th century as a defense against the Saracens .

In 1241 the castle Castel Vecchio was confiscated by Frederick II . After the battle of Tagliacozzo (50 km southeast) the last Staufer Konradin fled to Castel Vecchio on August 23, 1268. As a result, the castle came to the Counts of Mareri. The Orsini followed in 1440, the Estouteville in 1558 and the Borghese in 1634 . The Castel Antuni, on the other hand, belonged to the Brancaleoni and from the 18th century to the Del Drago.

From 1935 to 1938 the Lago del Turano was dammed. In the process, however, the most fertile soils in the region disappeared, leading to an emigration of the population. Today, however, the lake plays an important role in tourism, which has become the most important industry.

In 1944 the Castel Antuni was bombed during the advance of the Allies and the place around the Palazzo del Drago was completely abandoned by the population. In 1992 the Palazzo del Drago was restored and a clinic for drug addicts was set up there.
