Aquae Cutiliae

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aquae Cutiliae was a medicinal bath in ancient Italy .

The place was in the Sabine area between Reate ( Rieti ) and Interocrea , near today's Castel Sant'Angelo in the Velino Valley (near Cittaducale ).

A small lake ( Cutiliae lacus ) located there, which was considered to be the center of Italy, carried a floating island that no longer exists today. The hot and cold mineral springs rising near the lake were famous for their healing properties.

The Sabine town of Cutiliae ( Kotylia in Greek ) had apparently sunk into a small village in Roman times , which was on the territory of Reate. At the lake there were temples of Dis Pater and Victoria . The spa Aquae Cutiliae, which developed around the springs, was visited by the Roman emperor Vespasian , who died there in 79 AD, as did his son and successor Titus two years later.

Today the modern spa town of Terme di Cotilia is located on the site of the ancient town .
