The Castello di Fossa is the ruin of a hilltop castle on Monte Circolo in the Italian municipality of Fossa in the province of L'Aquila , from which the first nucleus of the medieval hamlet was formed.

history

The enclosed castle of Fossa is a typical result of the phenomenon of fortification of settlements, as it happened in the Middle Ages. It is actually found at the highest point of the village on the eastern slope of Monte Circolo . It gathered the population of the first vestinian and then Roman ancient city of Aveia.

The first settlement dates from the beginning of the 12th century and consisted of a keep on the top of the hill and the fortified trapezoidal enclosure that contained the first houses. The development of the settlement later extended to areas outside the castle enclosure. This form of the enclosed castle was widespread in this area, as can be seen in comparable structures in San Pio delle Camere , Bariscano and Bominaco .

description

Keep

The highest point of the castle consists of the keep with a circular floor plan, from which the walls extend, delimiting the trapezoidal enclosure, which is provided with four rectangular towers. The keep would have to date from the 12th or 13th century, whereas the rest of the complex must have been built at the end of the 13th or beginning of the 14th century.

The height of the surrounding walls is 8-10 meters; they are over a meter thick and have a battlement at the top . Two towers can be found at the lower corners of the enclosure and also served as residential towers . Another tower is on the north wall, while the fourth was built on the east side, next to the southeastern one.

The main entrance to the enclosure is in the northeast wall and consists of a large gate with a stone keel arch . A sideline is near the southwest tower.

The keep is 17 meters high and 8 meters in diameter. It does not have a door, but is accessible via a staircase that could be pulled back inside. A drawbridge connected the keep with the battlements on the surrounding wall.
