The Castello di Barisciano is the ruin of a hilltop castle at an altitude of 1094 meters on the Costa Castello mountain in the Italian municipality of Barisciano in the province of L'Aquila .

history

The castle was used to protect the settlement of Barisciano and was built around the 8th century in a strategically favorable position above the Navelli plateau at the entrance to the Gran Sasso . In the 13th century a fenced-in castle was built, where the population could find refuge in case of danger.

She played a role in the founding of the city of L'Aquila and on April 23, 1424, it was attacked and destroyed by Braccio da Montone during the siege of the city. Until 1529 it belonged to the city and then became a fief of aristocratic families. Around the 16th century it lost its role as a defensive structure and was abandoned.

To commemorate the epidemic of 1526, near one of its towers, the Church of San Rocco was built, inside of which there is a wooden statue of the saint and some frescoes from the 16th century.

description

The enclosed castle has a rectangular floor plan with a circumference of about 1 km. The pentagonal main tower was placed on the upper corner and there are further flanking towers along the perimeter wall ; there are eight towers in total.

Inside the enclosure there are the remains of other buildings in which - as with almost all enclosed castles - one did not live permanently.

San Rocco Church

The church was built near a castle tower at the end of the 16th century as a votive for the miracle of the saint during the plague epidemic in 1526. The chapel has a sloping gable roof and a small bell tower. The facade has been poorly restored and shows few artistic elements. Inside, which consists of a single barrel vaulted room , there are preserved frescoes from the 16th century depicting the life of the saint.
