The Castello di Gagliano Aterno is a hilltop castle located in the Valle Subequana in the Italian municipality of Gagliano Aterno in the province of L'Aquila at 653 meters above sea level in Abruzzo .
history
The founders of Gagliano Aterno were the same as those of L'Aquila , the Counts of Celano , who also began building the castle in the 12th and 13th centuries. In 1328 Isabella d'Aquino, Countess of Celano, a descendant of those of Aquila in the maternal line, had the castle expanded.
In 1462 the Castello di Gagliano Aterno was destroyed by the troops of Braccio da Montone and fell to the Piccolomini family in 1463 , who adapted it to their needs by adding two rings of defensive walls. Later it fell to Barberinis and Colonna di Sciarras , who kept it until 1806, when it fell to the Lazzaronis .
description
The castle is surrounded by a double defensive wall: The inner defensive wall can be reached via a drawbridge over a moat that is still preserved today . At the corners of the castle there are three cylindrical fortification towers and one polygonal one.
With the exception of the crenellated walls, the castle presents itself as a residential palace , which consists of several structures arranged around an inner courtyard with a fountain and surrounded by a vestibule and a small loggia on the first floor, which can be reached via an outside staircase.
When the castle was converted into an aristocratic residential building, the windows were enlarged and the loggia was added in two construction phases on the side facing the village. It has pointed arches to the inner courtyard and round arches on the first floor.
The castle is now a private residence, but some parts of the ground floor can be visited.
