Celano and the Piccolimini Castle |
Celano is a Italian town in the province of L'Aquila in the region Abruzzo with 10,764 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2019).
location
Celano lies on a hill above Lake Fucino and is dominated by the castle with corner towers, the Castello Piccolomini, which was built on the orders of Frederick II and dates back to 1450 in its current form.
The neighboring municipalities are Aielli , Avezzano , Castelvecchio Subequo , Cerchio , Collarmele , Gagliano Aterno , Luco dei Marsi , Ovindoli , Pescina , San Benedetto dei Marsi , Secinaro and Trasacco .
history
Celano's origins go back to Lombard times. A count of Celano is first mentioned in 1178. In 1223 the city was destroyed by Emperor Friedrich II after it fell. Their citizens were deported to Malta . In 1915 an earthquake devastated the city very badly .
Celano is the birthplace of Thomas von Celano (Tommaso da Celano), a high medieval author and chronicler.
According to tradition, the Christian martyrs Simplicius , Constantius and Victorinus were beheaded in Celano in 159 or 162 on the orders of the Roman emperor. Relics of the three martyrs are kept in a church in Celano.
The three churches of Celano have facades in the style of the 13th century like many churches in L'Aquila .

Celano has a connection to the A25 motorway , via which Rome and Pescara can be easily reached, and a train station on the Rome – Pescara railway line. South of the city is a small airfield ( Aviosuperficie ) for general aviation .
