San Benedetto dei Marsi is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 3850 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of L'Aquila in Abruzzo . The municipality is located about 43.5 kilometers southeast of L'Aquila on Lake Fucin and is part of the Comunità Montana Valle del Giovenco .

history

In ancient times, the city of Marrubium (also Marruvium and in Greek Μαρούϊον ) was located here . Even today the community belongs to the Marsica , a traditional union of numerous communities in the area. The diocese of Marsi (today diocese of Avezzano ) had its seat here from the 16th century until it was finally moved to Pescina and then to Avezzano .
