history
The valley of the Aterno was already settled in the pre-Roman times. Around 293 BC The area became Roman . Ocre is first mentioned in a document around 940. Since 1178 there has been talk of a fortress in Ocre, which is probably the castle of the main town of San Panfilo.
In 1226 the monastery of Santo Spirito ( Holy Spirit ) was founded in Ocre , which passed to the Cistercian order in 1248 .
When L'Aquila was founded in the 13th century, Ocre gained strategic importance because the castle could control a large part of the city 140 meters below. During this time the exposed Franciscan monastery of San Angelo was founded.
Until 1806 Ocre was a county ( barony ), most recently the Bonanni-Ocre family, some of whose descendants still live in Ocre today. The castle was also owned by the Bonanni-Ocre family.
Mayor of Ocre has been Fausto Fracassi from the Lista-civica since March 30, 2010. His predecessor (since 2004) was Gianmatteo Riocci from the center-left citizen list.
Attractions
Interesting for visitors are the monasteries, the remains of the castle and the festivals “Sagra del Forno” (Oven Festival) and “Sagra della Castagna ”.
