The Castello di San Pio delle Camere is the ruin of a hilltop castle halfway up Monte Gentile above the center of the Italian municipality of San Pio delle Camere in the province of L'Aquila .
history
The first written mention of the Castello di San Pio delle Carmere comes from 1173 and assigns it to the fief of the Barons of Poppleto (today's Coppito ), which gradually became the fief of the Caracciolos .
The function of the castle, which lies above the village, was to offer the population and their cattle a refuge in times of greatest danger. It does not seem that the castle was used as a permanent residence in addition to its defensive function.
The current ruinous state of the castle is due to the attack by Braccio da Montone in 1424, which also affected the Castello di Barisciano .

It is a fenced castle that was built in two stages, first the tower and then the enclosure walls.
The tower is a strut, that is, with a floor plan composed of a square and an equilateral triangle. The plan of the enclosure walls is triangular, with the main tower at the top corner, and other smaller, collapsed towers along the walls of the enclosure.
The castle grounds have been redesigned several times. B. attests to the elevation of the wall that was carried out in the 14th century.
