The Castello De Sanctis is the ruin of a hilltop castle on the slopes of Monte Morrone above the center of the Italian municipality Roccacasale in the province of L'Aquila .

history

Museum of Documentation and Popular Traditions

Tradition tells that the castle was built in 925 by the Counts of Spoleto to control the entrance to the Val di Sangro and the Altipiano delle Cinquemiglia . Throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance , the castle was under the control of the Cantelmo family , and from the end of the 16th century until 1803 it was owned by the Barons De Sanctis . Then it was destroyed by the French .

From 1994 to 1996 the municipality of Roccacasale had the castle restored, taking care of both the walkway to the castle and the remains, as well as the construction of a building that has housed the Museo della Documentazione e delle Tradizioni Popolari since 2004 .

description

The castle dominates the road from Popoli to Sulmona . It is a typical fenced castle, like many others on the Navelli plateau , such as B. the Castello di San Pio delle Camere , the Castello di Barisciano or the Castello di Fossa . The plan of the walls is triangular and on the upper side of the triangle there is a strut with a trapezoidal plan that has partially collapsed. The entrance to the castle, which sits on the lower side of the triangle facing the settlement, is dominated by a tower with a square floor plan with no interior.

In contrast to the other enclosed castles in the province of L'Aquila, there are also remains of a baron palace in Roccacasale, which testify to the use of the castle not only in times of danger to the settlement it was defending. The continued existence of the castle is also evidenced by other remains that are located within the enclosure, such as a cistern and the foundations of other residential buildings.
