The Castello di Oricola is a low castle on the edge of the Piana del Cavaliere (German: Knight's Plain) in the Italian municipality of Oricola in the province of L'Aquila .
history
The origins of the Castello di Oricola go back to the 9th century, when Rainaldo, Conte dei Marsi , had a small castle built together with other towers that were connected by a wall to ward off attacks by the Saracens and Huns .
In 1096 the castle fell to Aldegrina or Aldegrima del fu Pandolfo ( Princess of Capua ), Contessa of Carsoli , and the wife of another Rainaldo , a descendant of the builder who died during the first crusade . In the same year she donated the castle to the Abbey of Montecassino . In 1097 the "Castello di Auricola" (medieval toponym of the settlement) and the goods that were confirmed in the bull of Pope Urban II to the abbot of Montecassino, Oderisio , appeared.
In 1242, after the destruction of Carsoli, Frederick II's troops attacked the castle while pursuing the refugees who had sought refuge in Oricola.
In 1381 Oricola became a fiefdom of the Orsini family and the castle took on its present form after a renovation in the middle of the 15th century. In 1491 it fell to the Colonna family, but in 1528 the Orsinis was supposed to defeat the Colonnas near Magliano de 'Marsi , the castle was sacked and finally came back under the control of the Orsinis.
In 1557 the Castello di Oricola and the other neighboring castles were to be raided and looted again, this time by the troops of the Count of Albe .
description
The present castle has a triangular floor plan with three cylindrical towers at the corners. The two towers on the east facade have been completely restored, whereas the west tower has retained its original character.
In the north-western part of the building there are community offices, while there is a post office on the ground floor of the left part of the main facade . The rest of the castle is used privately.
