Cardinal Giovanni Ricci

Giovanni Ricci (* 1497 or November 1, 1498 in Chiusi or Montepulciano , † May 3, 1574 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He was the son of Pietro Antonio Ricci. Another cardinal from his family was Francesco Ricci (1679–1755), who in 1743 became cardinal. At the age of 15, Giovanni Ricci moved to Rome to escape abuse and abuse from his stepmother. There he was at the court of Cardinal Giovanni Maria Ciocchi del Monte, later Pope Julius III. , recorded. He later entered the service of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese , grandson and cardinal depository of Pope Paul III. Giovanni Ricci was entrusted with several difficult diplomatic missions in France and in the Duchy of Burgundy, which he mastered with considerable success. He then entered the clergy, was apostolic protonotary de numero participantium and in 1542 cleric of the apostolic chamber . He was also intern in Spain and Austria .

Elected Archbishop of Siponto (today Archbishopric Manfredonia-Vieste-San Giovanni Rotondo ) on June 26, 1544 , he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Portugal on the same day . After he renounced his archbishopric on February 20, 1545, he was appointed Bishop of Chiusi on the same day , which he probably remained until 1554. On March 4, 1550, his time as nuncio ended and he returned to Rome, where he was supported by Pope Julius III. on November 20, 1551 was accepted into the College of Cardinals and on December 4, 1551 was appointed cardinal priest of the titular church of San Vitale . After he held the pro hac vice to the title church from January 30, 1566 to August 7, 1566 Diakonie of Sant'Angelo in Pescheria , he became cardinal priest of Santa Maria in Trastevere on August 7, 1566 . This he remained until July 3, 1570. On this day he was raised by Pius V to Cardinal Bishop of Albano . On April 8, 1573 he changed his seat and became Cardinal Bishop of Sabina . From 1561 to 1562 he was also Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Montepulciano , from 1563 to 1564 he was Camerlengo of the College of Cardinals and from September 3, 1567 Archbishop of Pisa .

Even more than as a nuncio, Ricci was valued not only by the popes as a conscientious and honest financial expert and because of his friendly demeanor. Cardinal Ricci was a participant in all conclaves of his cardinalate: April 1555 , May 1555 , 1559 , 1565/1566 and 1572 . He was considered a papabile himself several times , but probably did not get a chance because of his distance from the church reform movement .

Giovanni Cardinal Ricci died on May 3, 1574 in Rome and was buried in the local church of San Pietro in Montorio .
