Girolamo Simoncelli

Girolamo Simoncelli (* 1522 in Orvieto ; † February 24, 1605 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He was the son of Antonio Simoncelli, a nobleman and patrician in Orvieto, and his wife Cristofora Ciocchi del Monte. His great uncle was Pope Julius III. , he was also related to Cardinal Fulvio Giulio della Corgna (1517–1583). His first name is also given as Gerolamo , his last name as Simonelli .

Church career

Girolamo Simoncelli was from his great uncle Julius III. in the consistory of December 22, 1553 appointed cardinal deacon and received on December 5, 1554 the title deaconry Santi Cosma e Damiano . He was bishop of Orvieto from June 25, 1554 and administrator from 1570. In August 1573 he was ordained a priest by Cardinal Fulvio Giulio della Corgna, Bishop of Perugia .

On January 15, 1588 Girolamo Simoncelli became a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Prisca . From 1598 to 1600 he was a cardinal proto-priest ; in 1600 he was accepted into the class of cardinal bishops and received successively the suburbicarian dioceses of Albano (February 21, 1600), Frascati (April 24, 1600) and from June 16, 1603 of Porto e Santa Rufina . The latter appointment was combined with the post of sub-dean of the College of Cardinals , which he held until his death.

He was buried in the church of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome.
