Interior

The Cathedral of Perugia, dedicated to St. Lawrence (San Lorenzo) in the historic center of the Umbrian provincial capital Perugia, is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Perugia-Città della Pieve . Its exterior and interior design is the result of a history of construction and transformation from the 12th to the 19th century.

history

The diocese of Perugia dates back to the 2nd century. The oldest traces of construction of today's cathedral from the 9th to 12th centuries do not appear in today's building. The construction, which was planned as early as 1300, was not started until 1345, and in 1490, when people in other parts of Italy were building in the style of the Renaissance, it was completed in its Gothic form. The 16th century added portals and smaller extensions, and in 1606 the campanile was added. The raw outer walls are still unfinished today. The facade faces the Piazza Danti, the choir faces west.

The extensive complex of chapter and seminar buildings belongs to the cathedral . Perugia was the site of the conclaves of 1216 , 1265, 1285, 1294 and 1305 . The Popes Innocent III. , Urban IV. And Martin IV. Died in Perugia and were buried in the cathedral; Innocent and Urban were later reburied in Rome and Troyes, respectively. From Julius III. who before his papal election u. a. was papal legate and governor of Perugia, Vincenzo Danti created the bronze statue on the cathedral in 1555.

architecture

The structure, which is essentially Gothic, has the shape of a three-aisled hall church with a transept and a polygonal apse. The floor plan and structure are based on the Church of San Domenico in Perugia, which is about a century older, but not preserved in its original form .

The largely unadorned facade is oriented towards the Piazza Danti in the east, while the actual front is on the southern side of the nave. A wide staircase leads to the side entrance, here is the bronze monument of Pope Julius III enthroned . (Vincenzo Danti, 1555) and to the right of it a small pulpit protrudes from the wall, which was put together from older parts and on which the Franciscan saint Bernardine preached to the Sienese in 1425 . To the side of the baroque portal from 1568, the beginnings of the unfinished marble cladding with a carpet-like Gothic quatrefoil can be seen, which was stolen from the cathedral in Arezzo in 1335. Further to the left are the four arcades of a loggia from 1423.

Furnishing

The rich furnishings of the hall church come mainly from the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods, the picture windows from the 16th and 19th centuries, and the high vaults were painted in the later 18th century. The first chapel in the right aisle is dedicated to St. Bernardine. It contains the Descent from the Cross by Federico Barocci (1569), one of his main works, which, with its soft color transitions, already points to the painting culture of the 17th century. In 1565 the Flemish painter Arrigo Fiammingo designed the stained glass window with the Saint Bernard sermon. A large marble prospectus from 1477 is placed in front of the baptistery. This is followed on the right by the sacrament chapel with an altarpiece on the Pentecost theme by Cesare Nebbia (1536–1614). Behind the wrought-iron lattice in the first aisle yoke on the left is the Joseph Chapel, in which the legendary wedding ring of Our Lady is venerated as a holy ring in an elaborately gold-plated tabernacle . The paintings Martyrdom of St. Sebastian by Orazio Alfani (1576), Stoning of Stephen by Giovanni Baglione (1608), and Our Lady surrounded by saints by Giovanni Antonio Scaramuccia (1616). The Madonna delle Grazie by Giannicola di Paolo on the third pillar on the right is of particular religious importance . The choir stalls from 1486–1491 with their excellent inlays were damaged by fire in 1985. To the right of the presbytery is the sacristy, the frescoes there are from the 1570s.
