Gaetano Pollio

Gaetano Pollio (born December 30, 1911 in Meta di Sorrento , metropolitan city of Naples , Italy , † March 13, 1991 in Salerno ) was an Italian Roman Catholic missionary and bishop . While serving in China, he was imprisoned from 1948 to 1951.

Life

Pollio was sent as a missionary to Kaifeng , China, by the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions on September 22, 1934 , one year after his ordination .

Pope Pius XII appointed him archbishop of Kaifeng on December 12, 1946 . He was ordained bishop on April 13, 1947 by the later Cardinal Antonio Riberi , at that time Apostolic Nuncio in China. Co- consecrators were Mario Civelli and Pietro Massa , both of whom worked as bishops in China. After the communists prevailed in Kaifeng in June 1948, Gaetano Pollio was arrested that same year. After he was released three years later, he returned to Italy in October 1951, but remained Archbishop of Kaifeng until 1960.

On September 8, 1960, Pope John XXIII appointed him . as Archbishop of Otranto , which he remained until his appointment as Archbishop of Salerno on February 5, 1969. From 1962 to 1965 he participated as a council father at the Second Vatican Council . In August 1973 Pollio was also appointed Bishop of Campagna.

Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation from office on October 20, 1984 due to illness. Gaetano Pollio died in 1991 at the age of 79.
