Demetrio Moscato

Demetrio Moscato (born February 4, 1888 in Gallina (today a district of Reggio Calabria ), † October 22, 1968 in Salerno ) was an Italian Roman Catholic clergyman and archbishop of Salerno .

Life

He studied at the Reggio Calabria seminary . After the earthquake in the Strait of Messina on December 28, 1908, Demetrio Moscato initially helped rescue the injured before taking part in the recovery of buried church works of art. He completed his studies in philosophy and theology at the Pontifical College of Anagni and was ordained a priest on October 13, 1912 . During the First World War he was a military chaplain in the 30th Infantry Regiment of the Pisa Brigade. He then worked as a pastor in Reggio Calabria.

On June 24, 1932 he was appointed Bishop of San Marco and Bisignano . He was ordained episcopal on September 8th of the same year by the Archbishop of Reggio Calabria , Carmelo Pujia ; Co- consecrators were Giuseppe Romeo , Bishop of Nocera de 'Pagani , and Paolo Albera , Bishop of Mileto . After the death of Archbishop Enrico Montalbetti, Demetrio Moscato returned to Reggio Calabria as Apostolic Administrator in 1943 .

On January 22, 1945 he became Archbishop of Salerno. His humanitarian commitment was also reflected in the aid he provided to the victims of the Salerno flood in 1954. In 1946 he was also appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Amalfi. In 1966 he took part in the first general assembly of the Italian bishops' conference after the end of the Second Vatican Council .

He died on October 22, 1968 in Salerno and was buried in the cathedral there.
