Salerno Cathedral
The Cathedral of San Matteo in the city of Salerno in the south of Campania is the oldest large church of Arab-Norman architecture . Construction began in 1080, three years after the Normans took over the city, which had previously been ruled by the Longobards for more than 400 years . The church was consecrated in 1084 and completed in 1085.
Because of the short construction time, cracks repeatedly formed in the structure over the centuries.
Unlike later works of its architectural style, the church does not yet have any pointed arches. The layout of the basilica with the atrium in front was based on the abbey church of Montecassino .
After severe damage from an earthquake in 1688, the cathedral was restored with baroque changes. In the 20th century, attempts were made to reconstruct the original facade.
