Girolamo Cardinal Rusticucci

Girolamo Rusticucci (January 1537 in Cartoceto , † June 14, 1603 in Rome ) was an Italian clergyman, bishop of Senigallia and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He was the son of the lawyer Ludovico Rusticucci and his wife Diamante Leonardi. His parents died when Girolamo Rusticucci was a young child. He received an education in the liberal arts and was a member of an oratorio.

In 1557 he came to Rome, where he was accepted into the court of Cardinal Michele Ghislieri, who in 1566 became Pope as Pius V. Girolamo Rusticucci became Cardinal Ghislieri's private secretary, after his election as Pope Rusticucci was appointed State Secretary of the Papal States. In the absence of the Cardinal Nepot Michele Bonelli , Rusticucci was entrusted with the majority of important church and state affairs. Rusticucci's sister, Diamante, was married to Cardinal Bonelli's brother, Girolamo Bonelli.

On June 16, 1570 Girolamo Rusticucci was appointed Bishop of Senigallia. He was ordained bishop on November 26, 1570 in the Sistine Chapel by Cardinal Marco Antonio Maffei , co- consecrators were his older brother Francesco Rusticucci , bishop of Fano in 1567 , and Giuseppe Pamphilj , bishop of Segni .

In the consistory of May 17, 1570 Pius V elevated him to cardinal priest and on June 9 of the same year awarded him the cardinal's hat and the titular church of Santa Susanna . As a cardinal, Girolamo Rusticucci was appointed legate for France and Spain and was given the task of supporting an alliance against the Turks . Under Pope Gregory XIII. he promoted the instruction and education of the clergy according to the prescriptions of the Tridentine . Before November 29, 1577 he resigned to the diocese of Senigallia. From 1588 to 1603 he was vicar general for the city of Rome and on January 8, 1590 he was chamberlain of the Holy Cardinals College , on February 14, 1592 he was confirmed in this office and held it until 1593. On August 18, 1597, he opted as cardinal proto-priest to the titular church of Santa Maria in Trastevere . On March 30, 1598 he became cardinal bishop of the suburbicarian diocese of Albano , on February 21, 1600 he moved to the suburbicarian bishopric of Sabina . Finally, on February 19, 1603, he moved to the bishopric of Porto e Santa Rufina and became cardinal subdean .

The Palazzo Rusticucci-Accoramboni on Via della Conciliazione in Rome goes back to his will . This palazzo was built from his estate by the builders Domenico Fontana and Carlo Maderno , but later fell into disrepair and was reconstructed in 1940.
