Michele Bonelli OP (born November 25, 1541 in Bosco Marengo as Antonio Bonelli , † March 28, 1598 in Rome ;) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He was the son of Marco Bonelli from Alessandria and his wife Domenica de 'Gibertis, a niece of the later Pope Pius V , who was thus his great-uncle. His great-nephew was Carlo Bonelli , who was also elevated to cardinal in 1664 . When he entered the Dominican order, Antonio Bonelli took the name of the order Michele . He made his profession in 1559 in the Dominican monastery of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome, where he studied at the Collegio Germanico . He later became professor of theology in Perugia . His great uncle, Pope Pius V, called him to Rome.

In the consistory of March 6, 1566 , this Pope created him cardinal priest . The cardinal's hat and the titular church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva were awarded to Michele Bonelli on March 20 of the same year. The cardinal creation took place with the permission to continue to wear the Dominican habit . In June 1568 he became Grand Prior of the Sovereign Order of Malta in Rome. The Pope appointed him cardinal chamberlain on December 3, 1568 , which he remained until May 10, 1570. On June 18, 1571 he was appointed legate in Spain and Portugal. The Pope declared him his cardinal nepot in the consistory of June 19, 1571 .

Michele Bonelli participated in the conclave of 1572 , which Pope Gregory XIII. chose. He became a member of the Index Congregation in 1572 and a member of the Council Congregation the following year . Gregory XIII. appointed him prefect of the religious congregation . From January 7, 1585 to January 7, 1587, Michele Bonelli was treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals . He was a participant in the 1585 conclave , from which Sixtus V emerged as pope. This appointed him his vicar general in Rome and in the Papal States . On November 8, 1589 he opted for the titular church of San Lorenzo in Lucina . He became a cardinal proto-priest and took part in the first conclave of 1590 , which elected Urban VII Pope. In October of the same year he took part in the second conclave of 1590 , which Pope Gregory XIV elected.

On March 20, 1591 Michele Bonelli opted for the cardinal class of the cardinal bishops and for the suburbicarian diocese of Albano . He was ordained bishop on April 2, 1591 in Rome by Cardinal Girolamo Bernerio OP, Bishop of Ascoli Piceno ; Co- consecrators were Vincenzo Casali , former Bishop of Massa Marittima , and Vincenzo Bonardo OP, Bishop of Gerace . Michele Bonelli took part in the conclave of 1591, the Innocent IX. Elected as Pope, under his pontificate he became Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and Regulars . He was also a participant in the 1592 conclave , from which Cardinal Aldobrandini emerged as Pope Clement VIII . Michele Bonelli became Prefect of the newly established Congregation for the Examination of Bishops. He supported the reconciliation between the Pope and King Henry IV of France.

After seven days of illness, Michele Bonelli died in Rome on March 28, 1598 and was buried there in the Dominican church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva .
