Girolamo Bernerio OP (* 1540 in Correggio , Emilia-Romagna , † August 5, 1611 in Rome ) was bishop of the Ascoli Piceno diocese and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

The son of Pietro Bernerio and Antonia Doria was related to the cardinals Scipione Cobelluzzi , Francesco Cennini de Salamandri and Desiderio Scaglia .

He entered the Dominican order , studied theology and philosophy. Belonging to the convent of Cremina, he was theological advisor to the local bishop and was inquisitor for Genoa. Finally prior of the Dominican convent in Rome, he was appointed Bishop of Ascoli Piceno on August 22, 1586 . He was ordained bishop in the Roman basilica of Santi XII Apostoli on September 7, 1586, by Cardinal Giulio Antonio Santorio ; Co- consecrators were Giulio Masetti , Bishop of Reggio Emilia , and Ottaviano Paravicini , Bishop of Alessandria .

Raised cardinal priest on November 16, 1586 , he received the titular church of San Tommaso in Parione on January 14, 1587 . Since November 8, 1589, he was given the titular church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva and was also the protector of the Order of the Servites . He took part in the conclaves of 1591 and 1592 and became cardinal priest of San Lorenzo in Lucina on June 17, 1602 . Raised Cardinal Bishop of Albano on June 16, 1603 , he resigned to the diocese of Ascoli Piceno before January 7, 1605. After he was elected at the first conclave of 1605 (election of Leo XI. ) And the second conclave of the same year (election of Paul V ), he became Bishop Cardinal of Porto and Santa Rufina and Subdean of the College of Cardinals on February 7, 1607 .

Girolamo Bernerio was the consecrator of Bishops Tadeo O'Farrell Mac Eoga and Claudio Rangoni and Archbishop Galeazzo Sanvitale .
