Tolomeo Gallio
Tolomeo Gallio (born September 25, 1527 in Cernobbio near Como , † February 3, 1607 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church and in 1595 acquired the county of Alvito , which he transferred to his nephew Tolomeo.
Life
He received his training in Como from Benedetto Giovio , especially in Latin based on Cicero's example . In 1544 he was sent by Benedetto to his brother Paolo Giovio in Rome, who hired Tolomeo as a copyist. Gallio stayed in this position until Giovio left Rome in 1549. Gallio began his spiritual work in the service of Cardinal Antonio Trivulzio , after which he worked as secretary to Cardinal Taddeo Gaddi and as private secretary to Giovanni Angelo de Medici , who was later elected Pope Pius IV. He was Bishop of Martirano and later Bishop of Manfredonia. Pope Pius IV elevated him to cardinalate on March 12, 1565 and appointed him in May d. J. as cardinal deacon of the titular church of San Teodoro . In the next few years he changed his title churches more often. 1587 Pope appointed him Sixtus V. to Cardinal Priest of the titular church of Santa Maria del Popolo , however, it rose in the same year 1587 the Cardinal Bishop of suburbicarian diocese Albano and 1589 for Cardinal Bishop of Sabina . In 1591 Gallio became Cardinal Bishop of Frascati and in 1600 received the suburbicarian seat of Porto from Clement VIII . Gallio worked in the Roman Curia , he became dean of the College of Cardinals in 1603 and received the diocese of Ostia as such . In February 1603, Clement VIII made Cardinal Gallio head of the Congregation for Rites and the Congregation for Ceremonies. He remained prefect of both dicasteries until his death in 1607.
