Alfonso Gesualdo (born October 20, 1540 in Calitri near Naples , † February 14, 1603 in Naples) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Church career

Elevated cardinal by Pope Pius IV in the consistory of February 26, 1561 at the young age of 20 , Gesualdo became cardinal deacon of Santa Cecilia in March of the same year and, after his ordination , cardinal priest of the same church from October 1563 , before becoming the titular church of Santa in 1572 Prisca changed and was cardinal priest of Sant'Anastasia from 1578 to 1579 , of San Pietro in Vincoli from 1579 to 1580 and of San Clemente from 1580 to 1583 . He was a member of the Curia and from 1564 Archbishop of Conza , which he on 23 April 1564 by Cardinal Francesco Pisani , the episcopal ordination received. In 1591 he became Cardinal Bishop of Ostia and thus Dean of the College of Cardinals . In this capacity he headed the conclaves of 1591 and 1592 , on which the Popes Innocent IX. and then Clement VIII were chosen. He also became Archbishop of Naples in 1596 .

Cardinal Gesualdo was a participant in seven papal elections, namely in the conclaves from 1565 to 1566 ; 1572 ; 1585 ; September 1590 ; October to December 1590 ; 1591 and 1592.

Gesualdo was the patron saint of Sant'Andrea della Valle in Rome , the mother church of the Theatine order .

Family relationships

Alfonso's brother Fabrizio , Prince of Venosa , was a brother-in-law of Cardinal Carlo Borromeo . The connection with the Borromeo dynasty had lasting significance for the Gesualdo family for half a century. The composer Carlo Gesualdo was Alfonso's nephew.
