Prospero Pubblicola Santacroce (born September 24, 1514 in Rome , † October 2, 1589 ibid) was an Italian Roman Catholic bishop and cardinal .

biography

Santacroce was born in Rome on September 24, 1514, the son of Tarquinio Santacroce and Ersilia de ' Massimi . He was an uncle of Cardinal Antonio Santacroce .

He received his PhD from the University of Padua . He then returned to Rome and in 1537 became consistorial lawyer. In 1538 he was auditor at Fabio Mignanelli , the then nuncio at Emperor Charles V was. He later became a trainee lawyer at the Apostolic Signature . In 1543 he became an auditor of the Roman Rota . The following year he was the auditor of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese , who was then papal legate a latere in the Holy Roman Empire . In May 1545 he accompanied the cardinal to the Diet in Worms.

On March 22, 1548 he was elected titular bishop of Cisamus . From April 5, 1548 to April 25, 1550 he was nuncio to Ferdinand I. During this time he took part in the Prague Reichstag, where he dealt with the Hussites . From July 15, 1552 to May 23, 1554 he was nuncio in the French Kingdom . On April 2, 1560 he became governor of Bologna . In 1560 he was extraordinary nuncio in Spain and from July 6, 1560 to May 10, 1561 nuncio in the Kingdom of Portugal . During his time in Portugal he was the first European to grow tobacco for the purpose of tobacco smoking ; the original name of tobacco in the Italian language was therefore erba Santacroce . From 1561 to 1565 he was again nuncio in France.

Pope Pius IV appointed him cardinal priest in the consistory of March 12, 1565 . However, he did not take part in the conclave from 1565 to 1566 , which Pope Pius V elected. On February 8, 1566 he received the red hat and the titular church of San Girolamo dei Croati .

On June 17, 1566 he became administrator of the Diocese of Arles . On April 12, 1570, he decided on the titular church of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri . He took part in the conclave of 1572 , in which Pope Gregory XIII. was chosen. He resigned the government of Cisamus before December 10, 1572 and of Arles before March 15, 1574. On May 5, 1574 he decided on the titular church of Sant'Adriano al Foro (a diakonia that was raised to the title pro illa vice ). From January 9, 1581 to January 8, 1582 he was chamberlain of the Holy College of Cardinals . On March 4, 1583, he decided on the titular church of San Clemente . He took part in the conclave of 1585 , in which Pope Sixtus V was elected. On March 2, 1589, he decided on the cardinals class of the Cardinal Bishops and received the Suburbicarian seat of Albano .

He died in Rome on October 2, 1589. He was buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore . His remains were later transferred to the Church of Santa Maria in Publicolis .
