The Church of Santa Maria in Publicolis is a Catholic place of worship in the historic center of Rome, located on Via dei Falegnami, in the Sant'Eustachio district.

Since 1858 the church has been entrusted to the Missionaries dei Sacri Cuori di Gesù e Maria , founded by St. Gaetano Errico , who made it his main house.

history

The church is built in Via Publicolis in the immediate vicinity of the Palazzo Santacroce in Sant'Angelo. She is in a bull by Urban III. from 1186 with the name Santa Maria de Publico listed as a branch of San Lorenzo in Damaso . The name could be derived from the proximity of the Porticus Minucia frumentaria , where the branches of the frumentum publicum were. In the 16th century the church was named Publicolis because the noble Santacroce family, who held the patronage of the church, claimed to trace their ancestry back to the Valerii Publicola of ancient Rome, and that name has remained to this day.

The church was restored in 1465 by the Santacroce family. It fell into disrepair, was demolished in 1642 and rebuilt from the same year on a plan by Giovanni Antonio De Rossi at the request of Cardinal Marcello Santacroce . The work was completed in 1643.

Since 1835 it has been the main house of the Missionari dei Sacri Cuori di Gesù e Maria .

- Deiparae Virgini in Publicolis MDCXLIII : inscription on the facade

The church of Santa Maria in Publicolis is kept in the baroque style both externally and internally .

The facade is divided into two orders by a high cornice, both of which are tripartite by vertical bands. The lower tier has a portal in the middle with a fresco depicting the Madonna enthroned between two Ionic pilaster strips between the angels; there are two empty semicircular niches on the sides . The upper tier, on the other hand, has simple Tuscan pilaster strips with a large window in the middle. The facade ends at the top with an arched pediment flanked by two sculptures, each of which depicts a pelican injured in the chest, the symbol of Christ .

The interior of the church consists of a single nave covered with a barrel vault with two side chapels.

In the right side chapel is the painting of Raffaello Vanni the Saint Helena prays the Cross to see. In the left side chapel there is instead a painting of St. Francis of Assisi by Alessandro Grimaldi . At the end of the nave is the rectangular, domed apse , completely occupied by the presbytery , which houses the high altar in polychrome marble with the Nativity of the Virgin by Raffael Vanni.

On the choir on the opposite facade stands the Mascioni organ opus 307 , built in 1912 .

There are several tombstones from the 15th and 16th centuries on the floor. The church houses part of the tombs of the Santacroce family: Alfonso, Prospero , Antonio , Marcello , Andrea and Valerio. There is also the tomb of Ottavia Corsini.
