Marcello Santacroce (born June 7, 1619 in Rome , † December 19, 1674 ibid) was an Italian cardinal and bishop of Tivoli (1652-1674).

biography

Marcello Santacroce was born on June 7, 1619 in Rome to Valerio and Elena Maria Santacroce. He comes from a family with several cardinals: his great-uncle was Cardinal Prospero Santacroce (raised in 1565) and his uncle was Cardinal Antonio Santacroce (raised in 1629). His nephew, Andrea Santacroce , was also promoted to cardinal in 1699. He studied theology , Greek and Latin before receiving his doctorate in law in Rome . On August 14, 1639 he was made canon of the Vatican Basilica and later a trainee lawyer at the Tribunals of the Apostolic Signature , prelate of the Congregation for the Administration of Goods, Commissioner for Peace among the People of Rieti , Vice Delegate of Bologna and Commissioner General of the three embassies Bologna, Ravenna and Ferrara appointed. He then returned to Rome, where he became prelate of the Consulta Congregation , commissioner general of the papal fleet and abbot of Santa Spirito di Sonnone in Gaeta .

In the consistory of February 19, 1652 he was elevated to cardinal by Pope Innocent X. On March 12, 1652 he became cardinal priest of Santo Stefano al Monte Celio . His appointment as Bishop of Tivoli took place on October 14, 1652 during the tenure of Pope Innocent X. On October 28, 1652 he was ordained bishop by Fabio Chigi , the cardinal priest of Santa Maria del Popolo , with Giambattista Spada , the titular patriarch of Constantinople , and Ranuccio Scotti Douglas, the former bishop of Borgo San Donnino , served as co- consecrators . On January 12, 1965, he was appointed treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals , an office which he held until January 11, 1666. As a cardinal, he took part in the conclave of 1655 (which elected Pope Alexander VII), in the conclave of 1667 (which elected Pope Clement IX ) and in the conclave from 1669 to 1670 (which elected Pope Clement X ). He worked as Bishop of Tivoli near Rome until his death on December 19, 1674.
