Federico Sforza
Federico Sforza (born January 20, 1603 in Rome , † May 24, 1676 ibid) was an Italian cardinal and bishop .
Life
He came from the line of the Dukes of Segni, a branch of the powerful and extensive aristocratic family of the Sforza . His parents were Alessandro Sforza, 7th Count of Santa Fiora, Duke of Segni and Prince of Valmontone, and his wife Eleonora Orsini . Federico Sforza was a great-nephew of Cardinals Guido Ascanio Sforza di Santa Fiora and Alessandro Sforza , his cousin was Cardinal Alessandro Orsini , and he was related to Cardinal Francesco Sforza . He held the title of Prince of Valmontone. On November 11, 1623, he entered the service of the Curia as Apostolic Protonotary . He was governor of Terni in 1625 and governor of Cesena from August 1625 to January 1626 . From 1637 to 1645 he was vice-legate in Avignon.
Pope Innocent X created him in the consistory of March 6, 1645 as cardinal deacon . Federico Sforza received the red hat and the title deaconry Santi Vito e Modesto on July 10, 1645. From September 27, 1645 to July 12, 1653 he was pro- Camerlengo . In addition, from 1650 he was titular archimandrite of San Salvatore in Messina .
On November 19, 1646, Federico Sforza was appointed Bishop of Rimini . He received his episcopal ordination on December 30th of the same year in the Roman church Il Gesù Cardinal Pier Luigi Carafa ; Co- consecrators were Alessandro Vittrici , Bishop of Alatri , and Ranuzio Scotti , Bishop of Borgo San Donnino . Federico Sforza took part in the 1655 conclave elected by Pope Alexander VII . On June 26, 1656 he opted for the cardinal class of cardinal priests and the titular church of San Martino ai Monti . In the same year he renounced the bishopric of Rimini. From January 13, 1659 to January 12, 1660 he was chamberlain of the Holy College of Cardinals . On April 21, 1659 he opted for the titular church of Sant'Anastasia and on November 21, 1661 for San Pietro in Vincoli . Federico Sforza was a participant in the 1667 conclave , which was included in the election of Clement IX. flowed. He was also among the cardinals who formed the conclave 1669-1670 , from which Clement X emerged as pope. On January 28, 1675, Federico Sforza was transferred to the bishopric of Tivoli .
He died in Rome and was buried on May 26, 1676 in the Sforza family chapel in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore .
