Nicolas Mignard

Nicolas Mignard (baptized February 7, 1606 in Troyes , † May 20, 1668 in Paris ) was a French baroque painter and engraver . He was the older brother of Pierre Mignard .

life and work

Nicolas Mignard was born in Troyes in Champagne , where he learned the painting trade from an unknown master and studied the works of the Fontainebleau school . In 1635 he accompanied the Archbishop of Lyon to Rome and stayed there for two years. During this time he copied works by Annibale Carracci and Francesco Albani , and made numerous etchings .

On his return to France he settled in Avignon , married and worked as an altar painter. In 1660 Mazarin called him to Paris , where he decorated some rooms on the ground floor of the Palais des Tuileries on behalf of Louis XIV . In 1663 he was admitted to the royal academy , where he was finally rector.

He was strongly influenced by Nicolas Poussin and was overshadowed by his brother Pierre for a long time, but is now more valued again.

Numerous portraits of his contemporaries have come down to us, including Louis XIV , Simon Vouet and Molière .
