Francesco Albani: Mercury and Apollo , ca.1623

Francesco Albani (born August 17, 1578 in Bologna , † October 4, 1660 ibid) was an Italian painter of the Bolognese school .

Albani had the Dutchman Denys Calvaert as teachers , then Lodovico Carracci and as his childhood friend and classmate Guido Reni , who then came up against him as a rival.

Albani made around 45 altarpieces in the style of the Carracci school. Most of all, however, he liked to paint idyllic objects from ancient myths or depictions such as those given to him by the shepherd poetry of the same time, namely Torquato Tassos and Guarino Guarini . From his second, very beautiful wife, he is said to have had twelve children of such beauty that they could serve him as the most suitable models for his Venus , Galatea , Cupid and angel figures. The landscapes, which often make up an essential part of his pictures, are also full of serenity and grace. But Albani's contemporaries no longer valued this monotony as much towards the end of his life as it did before.

He is said to have taught in the Accademia degli Incamminati , a foundation of the Carraccis.
