Alessandro Orsini

Alessandro Orsini (* 1592 in Bracciano near Rome ; † August 22, 1626 there ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Alessandro came from the noble Orsini family , which included three popes and a number of cardinals, and belonged to their Bracciano branch. He was the youngest of eleven children of the Duke of Bracciano Virginio Orsini and his wife Flavia Damasceni-Peretti, a grandniece of Pope Sixtus V. Alessandro Orsini was a cousin of Cardinal Federico Sforza .

He was educated at the court of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Ferdinand I , his great-uncle, and studied at the universities of Siena and Pisa .

Pope Paul V created him in the consistory of December 2, 1615 as a cardinal deacon . The Pope awarded him the title diaconia Santa Maria in Cosmedin on January 11, 1616. Orsini took part in the 1621 conclave , which Pope Gregory XV. chose. On May 17, 1621 he was appointed legate in Romagna . At the conclave in 1623 , from the VIII Urban. Emerged as Pope, Cardinal Orsini could not attend because he was traveling at the time by Germany. Urban VIII refused the ascetic Orsini consent to resign from the office of cardinal and join the Jesuits . Alessandro Orsini was a sponsor of Galileo Galilei .

He died in Bracciano and was buried in the Roman church of Santissimo Nome di Gesù next to the grave of the Jesuit Cardinal Roberto Bellarmino .
