Pedro de Deza (born March 26, 1520 in Seville , Spain , † August 27, 1600 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Pedro de Deza was the son of Antonio de Deza and Beatriz de Portugal (or de Guzmán) and related to the Portuguese royal family. He was also a nephew of the Archbishop of Seville and Grand Inquisitor Diego de Deza OP . He first learned Latin at Juan Ulloa Pereira and then entered the Colegio Viejo de San Bartolomé of the University of Salamanca in order there law to study.

He later became professor of law at the Colegio Viejo de San Bartolomé at the University of Salamanca. For eight years he was Vicar General of the Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela . In 1556 he became a judge in Valladolid . During the pontificate of Paul IV he was Archdeacon of Calatrava in the Archdiocese of Toledo . He later became an auditor at the Inquisition's Supreme Court . Pedro de Deza was President of the Audiencia (Administration and Court) of Granada in 1566 . He enforced various ordinances of King Philip II , which forbade the forced baptized Muslims ( Moriscos ) to continue using their language and customs.

Pope Gregory XIII created him in the consistory of February 21, 1578 cardinal priest , the cardinal's hat and the titular church of San Ciriaco alle Terme Diocleziane were awarded to him on June 22, 1580. From 1580 he lived in Rome. On January 9, 1584 he moved to the titular church of Santa Prisca . He participated in the conclave in 1585 with the election of Pope Sixtus V in part. On November 19, 1586 he was appointed Inquisitor General of the Holy Office . His titular church was from April 20, 1587 San Girolamo degli Schiavoni . He took part in both the first and the second conclave of 1590, in which Urban VII and then Gregory XIV were elected pope. He was also a participant in the conclave of 1591 , from the Innocent IX. emerged as Pope. He also took part in the conclave of 1592 , which brought Clement VIII to the chair of Peter. On August 18, 1597 he moved to the titular church of San Lorenzo in Lucina and on March 30, 1598 he became cardinal proto-priest .

On April 24, 1600 Pedro de Deza was elevated to cardinal bishop of the suburbicarian diocese of Albano . The episcopal ordination was donated to him personally on June 18, 1600 in St. Peter's Basilica by Pope Clement VIII , co-consecrators were the cardinals Domenico Pinelli and Camillo Borghese .

Pedro de Deza died in Rome in August 1600 and was first buried in his former titular church, San Lorenzo in Lucina . According to his will, his bones were later transferred to Spain and finally buried in the monastery of the Discalced Carmelites in Villaguer . This monastery was closed in 1826.
