Fernando de Toledo Oropesa

Fernando de Toledo Oropesa (* 1520 in Spain , † 1590 in Oropesa ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He came from the noble Spanish family of the Counts of Oropesa. His parents were Luis de Toledo y Pacheco and Inés Duchess Estrada, a relative was the Cardinal Juan Álvarez de Toledo .

Fernando de Toledo studied at the University of Salamanca and befriends Juan de Ribera , who later became Archbishop of Valencia . After receiving his ordination , he declined all honors and benefices that were intended for him and devoted himself exclusively to preaching , hearing confession and pastoral care . King Philip I of Spain proposed him to the Pope for cardinal dignity.

Created cardinal on February 21, 1578, he was raised to the rank of cardinal priest on June 21, 1578 , but without receiving a title church . However, he renounced his cardinalate, which aroused great amazement in Rome. On July 4, 1578, Pope Gregory XIII accepted. the decision and withdrew the cardinal insurrection. At the same time, the Pope complained to the Spanish king that he had proposed a person who was not inclined to accept the dignity offered to her. The King replied that he could not have imagined that one of his subjects, however pious and generous he might be, could reject a dignity which many other, even high-ranking personalities, so desired.
