Juan de Riberia (born March 20, 1533 in Seville , Spain , † January 6, 1611 in Valencia , Spain) was Archbishop of Valencia . He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church .

Life

Juan, who studied at the University of Salamanca , was ordained a priest in 1557 . Pope Pius IV appointed him Bishop of Badajoz on May 27, 1562 . On April 30, 1568 he was named Patriarch of Antioch and on December 3 of the same year Archbishop of Valencia . The inauguration in Valencia took place on March 21 of the following year.

Juan convened several synods to implement the decisions of the Council of Trent . From 1602 he was also the Viceroy of Valencia.

He was saved on September 18, 1796 - and on June 12, 1960 by Pope John XXIII. canonized. His liturgical day of remembrance is celebrated in various Spanish dioceses on January 7th, 14th and 19th respectively as a mandatory day of remembrance , in the Archdiocese of Valencia as a festival .
