Francesco Armellini Pantalassi de 'Medici (born July 13, 1470 in Perugia , † January 8, 1528 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal and Catholic archbishop .

biography

Francesco was born into a wealthy merchant family. His father Benvegnate (or Benvenuto) Pantalassi apparently took the family name of his wife (Armellini). His maternal uncle made him a universal heir and took care of his education.

He moved to Rome and completed his law degree. As a ruthless businessman, he quickly amassed a large fortune. In order to amass more prestige and power, it decided to pursue an ecclesiastical career. In November 1504 he received the office of cleric of the Apostolic Chamber , then Apostolic Protonotary , Secretary to Pope Julius II and the College of Cardinals . His business talents made him particularly indispensable to Pope Leo X , who needed new sources of income because of the war for the Duchy of Urbino . As a reward for his services, he was accepted into his family: Francesco Armellini obtained an adoption by Leo X and added de 'Medici to his name.

Pope Leo X raised him on July 1, 1517 in the consistory to the rank of cardinal as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Callisto . In 1523 he decided on the titular church of Santa Maria in Trastevere .

During his life he held various offices, including apostolic legate in the Marches , Umbria and France , director of the papal finances, apostolic administrator of the diocese of Oppido Mamertina , archbishop of the diocese of Taranto (from December 15, 1525 to October 1527), future datarabab of the Abbey of Santa Maria di Valdiponte in Perugia , Camerlengo of Holy Roman Church (September 13, 1521 to his death). The latter appointment earned him envy and enmity, and most importantly, the hatred of the tax-crushed Roman people. His career took off during the brief pontificate of Pope Hadrian VI. interrupted and brought him to the brink of ruin, but it was continued again with the election of the second Medici Pope Clement VII .

He lost all his immeasurable fortune at the Sacco di Roma in 1527 by the mercenaries of Charles V and had to seek refuge in Castel Sant'Angelo . Shortly afterwards he probably died of the plague. He is buried in the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere.

Francesco Armellini Pantalassi de 'Medici took part in the conclave 1521–1522 , which Pope Hadrian VI. elected, and in 1523 , which Pope Clement VII elected, participated.
