Decio Francesco Vitelli (born August 30, 1582 in Città di Castello , † February 1646 in Urbino ) was an Italian , Catholic archbishop .

biography

Decio Francesco Vitelli was born on August 30, 1582 to Vincenzo Vitelli (son of Alessandro Vitelli ) and Faustina Vitelli (daughter of Chiappino ). He belonged to the Vitelli noble family , both on his mother's and his father's side: Vincenzo was Faustina's uncle. Francesco never met his father because he was killed in Rome in 1583 as a general of the papal infantry.

After studying with excellent results, he was appointed trainee lawyer by Pope Paul V in 1612 and then by Gregory XV. as governor of San Severino Marche before being transferred to the province of Ancona to face the serious crisis in that area. In 1624 he was sent to the province of Ascoli Piceno to reform the local tax system.

In 1625 he returned to Rome, where he was appointed a member of the Sacra Consulta and the Congregazione dei Confini and voted in the Apostolic Signature . Having thus achieved a very important position, he was repeatedly appointed Commissioner in 1630 to the one Papal States threatening to confront the plague and in 1632 to as a diplomat between Ferrara and the Venetian Republic to act. On August 16, 1632 he was appointed titular archbishop of Thessaloniki . The consecration took place on September 21, 1632 in Venice in the church of San Salvatore by Federico Baldissera Bartolomeo Cornaro . In the Serenissima he was apostolic nuncio for about 11 years , and thanks to his interventions, the Venetians declared war on the Pope several times.

On June 7, 1634, he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Terni by Urban VIII , an office he held until 1636. In 1641 he was appointed Archbishop of Urbino . In 1643 he was appointed Prelato di fiocchetto before he died in Urbino in 1646.

Francesco Vitelli was buried in Rome in the Vitelli chapel in the church of San Marcello al Corso .

Vitelli was a man of great culture, the author of some political and historical treatises, also translated some works and assisted some writers.
