Andrea della Valle (Cardinal)
Andrea della Valle (born November 29, 1463 in Rome , † August 3, 1534 ibid) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
As the second of four children of Filippo Della Valle and his wife Girolama Margani, he came from a well-known old family of doctors and lawyers. His last name is also reproduced as de Valle or Vallense.
He received the ordination as a subdeacon , was apostolic scribe and from 1503 to 1517 canon of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican .
On December 2, 1496 he was appointed Bishop of Crotone . From 1503 to 1507 he was regent of the Apostolic Chancellery . Transferred to the bishopric of Mileto on February 23, 1508, he resigned to this diocese on November 26, 1523 in favor of his nephew Quinzio Rustici. Della Valle attended the Fifth Lateran Council of 1512 as a council father and was apostolic secretary under the pontificate of Julius II.
In the consistory of July 1, 1517 Pope Leo X appointed him cardinal priest and on July 6 of the same year awarded him the cardinal's hat and the titular church of Sant'Agnese in Agone . From March 2, 1524 to January 12, 1526 he was chamberlain of the Holy College of Cardinals . Archpriest of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore since 1520 , he opened and closed the Holy Door in the Holy Year 1525. He took part in the conclave 1521-1522 , the Pope Hadrian VI. chose. On September 4, 1522 he was again bishop of Crotone and remained so until November 14, 1524. He also took part in the 1523 conclave , which Clement VII elected Pope. He became a legate in Naples and in 1523 cardinal protector of the Friars Minor. On March 27, 1525 he moved to the titular church of Santa Prisca . He was involved in the conflicts that Clement VII fought with the Colonna , as well as in the conflict between the same Pope and Emperor Charles V. During the Pope's absence in 1529 Andrea della Valle was governor of Rome.
On April 21, 1533 he was raised to Cardinal Bishop of Albano and moved to the suburbicarian bishopric of Palestrina on December 12 of the same year .
Around 1517 he had the Palazzo Della Valle built for himself as his residence (today's address Corso Vittorio Emanuele II 101). The name of the palazzo was subsequently transferred to the surrounding area, in particular to the church of Sant'Andrea della Valle (built 1591–1599) and the Teatro Valle (built 1726).
Andrea della Valle died in Rome and was buried in the family vault in the church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli .
