Peter Burian (born on August 7, 1931 in Mährisch-Ostrau - Witkowitz ) is a German historian. He was Professor of Middle and Modern History at the University of Cologne .

The catholic son of the engineer Walter Burian and his wife Felicitas geb. After attending high school, Arnold studied at the Universities of Cologne and Tübingen . Burian was established in 1960 at the University of Cologne to Dr. phil. PhD. The topic of his work was the nationality conflict in Cisleithanien using the example of the electoral reform in the course of the March Revolution . He then worked from 1961 to 1965 as a research assistant at the Herder Institute (Marburg) and then as a research assistant at the University of Cologne, where he was part of Theodor Schierer's research staff . In 1973 Burian became a private lecturer , an extraordinary professor in 1976 and a full professor in 1980 in Cologne.

Since 1970 he has been a member of the Historical Commission for the Bohemian Lands . His research interests are shaped by the area of ​​his dissertation, the nationalities of the Habsburg Monarchy , and expanded to include East Central Europe in the interwar period .
