Afonso de Portugal (born April 23, 1509 in Évora , † April 16, 1540 in Lisbon ) was Infante ( Prince ) of Portugal and a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church . He was a brother of Johann III. of the future king of Portugal.

Life

The fourth son of King Manuel I of Portugal had studied literature, Latin and Greek languages . Raised an Apostolic Protonotary at an early age , he was appointed Bishop of Idana on September 9, 1516 , Pope Leo X elevated him to Cardinal on July 1, 1517 and transferred him to the Bishopric of Viseu on February 23, 1519 . In 1523, Aires de Figueiredo Barbosa took over his training as a humanist and professor of Greek from the University of Salamanca . On February 20, 1523 he was appointed Archbishop of Lisbon and Bishop of Évora . As a cardinal deacon he received the title deaconry Sta. Lucia in Septisolio and received the pallium as Archbishop of Lisbon on July 16, 1535 after he had received the episcopal ordination. On August 13, 1535 he moved to the title church Ss. Giovanni e Paolo .
