Garry Birtles (born July 27, 1956 in Nottingham ) is a former English football player and football coach . He was best known for his time at Nottingham Forest, with which he won the English championship once and the European Cup twice.
life and career
Birtles started at amateur clubs Long Eaton Rovers and Long Eaton United. He joined Nottingham Forest in 1976 for a transfer fee of £ 2,000 . He made his debut in March 1977 in the second division against Hull City . In the same season he and his team were promoted to the first division . As a climber, Birtles and his team succeeded in winning the English championship in the Football League First Division in 1977/78 . The team's triumphant advance continued into the coming season. Nottingham won the title in the National Champion Cup in 1979 and the following year the title defense in the National Champion Cup in 1980 . Garry Birtles had a particularly large share in winning the 1979 League Cup. In the final in front of over 90,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium against FC Southampton , he scored two goals in a 3-2 win. In the first four years until moving to Manchester United in 1980 he won so with the Reds in 1979 and 1980 the European Champions Cup , in 1978 the English league title, the 1979 European Super Cup and 1978, the 1979 English League Cup.
In 1980 he moved to Manchester for £ 1.25m. Birtles had scored six goals in the first nine league games for Nottingham Forest and thus awakened Dave Sexton's willingness to transfer this high transfer fee for the time. Birtles started badly at his new club, not a single goal in 25 league games. After eighth place in the 1980/81 season, the team managed a third place in the table in the 1981/82 season and thus qualification for the 1982/83 UEFA Cup . Under the new coach Ron Atkinson it had gone much better for him, he scored eleven goals in 33 games. However, after only two years with the Red Devils, Birtles decided to change clubs and went back to the Reds. This time the five years at Nottingham Forest weren't so successful. The team was unable to win a title during this time, but at least reached the semi-finals of the 1983/84 UEFA Cup and only missed the final against Tottenham Hotspur due to dubious referee decisions . Garry Birtles was able to prove his class again especially in the seasons 1983/84 (15 goals) and 1986/87 (14 goals). After that season he went to neighboring Notts County and then to Grimsby Town , where he let his career end.
In 1980 he was called up three times for the English national football team . He took part in the 1980 European Football Championship in Italy and was eliminated with the team in the group stage. He is currently a co-commentator for Sky Sports and a local radio station in Nottingham. He also writes columns for the Nottingham Evening Post. From 1997 to 1999 he was the coach of the lower class club Gresley Rovers.
