Dave Sexton

David Sexton (born April 6, 1930 in Islington , † November 25, 2012 ) was an English football player and football coach .

Career

Player career

The son of a former professional boxer began his professional career at West Ham United in 1948 in the youth team. In 1951 he made his professional debut at Luton Town . From 1952 to 1955 he also played in the first team of West Ham United. The further course of the career were season stays at Leyton Orient (1956-1957), Brighton & Hove Albion (1957-1958) and Crystal Palace (1959). In 1959 Sexton ended his playing career.

Coaching career

The Englishman had his first short-term coaching job at Leyton Orient in 1965. From 1967 to 1974 he was coach at Chelsea . With the Blues he won the FA Cup in 1970 and won the Cup Winners' Cup in 1971. After the successes at national and international level, he was fired in 1974 because of the poor performance of his team. Sexton immediately went to the Queens Park Rangers , which he remained loyal to 1977. In 1977 he joined the Red Devils in Manchester . At Manchester United , Sexton was not happy. After four relatively unsuccessful years, he became the coach of the English U-21 team. As a coach of the U-21s, he was European junior champion twice. He was an U-21 coach from 1977 to 1996, with a break as head coach at Coventry City from 1981 to 1983 and a four-year career break.
