Giovanni Battista Savelli (* around 1422 in Rome , † September 18, 1498 in Castel Gandolfo ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

As the son of Nicola Savelli, Signor of Palombara and Castel Gandolfo, Giovanni Battista Savelli belonged to the Roman noble family of Savelli, which also included Pope Honorius IV (1285–1287) and the cardinals Bertrando Savelli , Giacomo Savelli , Silvio Savelli , Giulio Savelli , Fabrizio Savelli and Paolo Savelli came from. Savelli was apostolic protonotary and was governor of Bologna from 1468 to 1470 , then governor of the Marches until February 1474 .

Pope Paul II secretly appointed him cardinal in pectore in May or June 1471 along with three other clergymen . Out of consideration for the French king, this cardinal appointment was not announced. For the same reason and because of the objection on the part of Cardinal Latino Orsini , the four cardinals were not admitted to the 1471 conclave , which Sixtus IV elected pope. Giovanni Battista Savelli then became a legate in Perugia .

In the consistory of May 15, 1480 , Sixtus IV created him cardinal deacon . The title Diakonie Santi Vito e Modesto Giovanni Battista Savelli received shortly thereafter, and on June 3, 1480 he received in the Vatican Basilica the red hat. After several legations in Perugia and Genoa, he fell out of favor with Sixtus IV in 1482 after a dispute with the Orsini and was accused of high treason in the consistory of January 2, 1483 . Although he denied all allegations, the cardinal was imprisoned in the Vatican Palace , where he stayed with Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere, who later became Pope Julius II . The following day, Giovanni Battista Savelli, together with Cardinal Giovanni Colonna in the Castel Sant'Angelo spent. He was sick until November 15, 1483, when he was released. On the same day he took part in a renewed consistory, which declared him innocent. Shortly afterwards, or on March 17, 1484, he switched to the titular diaconia of San Nicola in Carcere Tuliano . He took part in the 1484 conclave that Pope Innocent VIII elected. In 1484 he found himself again as a legate in Bologna. Also at the 1492 conclave, from which Alexander VI. when Pope emerged, Giovanni Battista Savelli took part.

From August 31, 1492 to March 27, 1493 he was administrator of the diocese of Mallorca . In September 1492 he became archpriest of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore , which he remained until his death. On December 31, 1493 he accompanied King Charles VIII of France on his entry into Rome. On the occasion of a meeting between the Pope and the King, Cardinal Savelli's legation in Spoleto was confirmed. In April 1495 he stayed with the king in Naples, and after his departure from Italy the cardinal spent a year and a half outside Rome. On December 22nd, 1496 he returned there with Bishop Pietro of Cesena and was received by the Pope the following evening.

Giovanni Battista Savelli was devoted to worldly life and luxury.

He was buried in the Church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli .
