Latino Orsini

Latino Orsini (* 1411 in Rome ; † August 11, 1477 ibid) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church . He belonged to the powerful noble family of Orsini , who came from the Bracciano branch.

Church career

Latino Orsini became Bishop of Conza in Italy on March 10, 1438 , and one year later Archbishop of Trani . Pope Nicholas V elevated him to cardinal on December 4, 1448. In 1454 the Pope appointed him Archbishop of Bari . He took part in the 1455 conclave, which Pope Calixt III. chose. After his death he was a participant in the conclave of 1458 , from which Pius II emerged as pope. Orsini accepted the oath from Ferdinand of Naples as Legatus a latere and crowned it in Barletta . In 1463 he became archpriest of the Lateran basilica . During the reign of Paul II , in whose election he took part in 1464, Orsini became a legate for the brands . On June 7th, 1465 he was raised to Cardinal Bishop of Albano , on October 14th, 1468 he moved to the suburbicarian seat of Frascati . Orsini was a participant in the conclave of 1471 , which Sixtus IV elected pope. This appointed him on August 9, 1471 to the camerlengo of the Roman Church. From 1472 he was also Archbishop of Taranto . In the war against the Ottoman Empire he was commander in chief of the fleet.

Family relationships

Before Latino Orsini the priestly ordinations received, he was already the father of a son, Paulo. He was an uncle of Cardinal Giambattista Orsini .
