List of domestic dogs

The Erdélyi Kopó ( Transylvanian Hound, Hungarian Hound ) is a breed from Hungary recognized by the FCI ( FCI Group 6, Section 1, Standard No. 241 ). The translation of the word Erdélyi from Hungarian called Transylvania , the word Kopo refers to a hound .

Origin and history

The breed originated in Transylvania from a very old breed type adapted to the climate and the region of the Carpathians . In the Middle Ages, the forerunner of today's Transylvanian Bracke was a very popular hunting dog for noble hunting. The Transylvanian Bracke was created towards the end of the 19th century, at a time when Transylvania was part of Hungary, from the mixture of black bracken, which no longer exist in the form, with Transylvanian hunting dogs. They were available as a tall and a low-leg form. By the beginning of the 20th century, the breed was all but extinct. With the remaining specimens, breeding was resumed in 1963. Hungarian cynologists collected preserved specimens of the breed and rebuilt them on this basis. The breed was recognized by the FCI in 1963. In the meantime the breed is no longer rare in Hungary and Romania (as Copoi Ardelenesc ), but only the high-legged form still exists.

description

The Erdélyi Kopó is up to 65 cm tall and weighs at least 25 kg. The whole body, including the lower part of the abdomen, is covered with short, dense, straight, coarse hair that lies well against the body. The basic color of the dogs is black with tan on the muzzle and legs. The tail is slightly curved upwards and is carried above the back line when excited. The drooping, medium-high ears lie close to the cheeks without folds, and when placed forward, they hardly cover the eyes.
