Giulio Savelli
Giulio Savelli (* 1574 in Rome ; † July 9, 1644 ibid) was an Italian clergyman, Archbishop of Salerno and cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
Origin and early years
He was the son of the Roman nobleman Bernardino Savelli, first Duke of Castel Gandolfo and Marchese of Roccapriora, and his second wife Lucrezia dei Conti dell'Anguillara. From the same old noble family of Savelli came Pope Honorius IV. (Originally Giacomo Savelli ) and the Cardinals Bertrando Savelli , Giovanni Battista Savelli , Silvio Savelli , Giacomo Savelli , Fabrizio Savelli and Paolo Savelli .
Giulio Savelli was governor of Orvieto in 1605 and governor of Spoleto from February 21, 1607, then governor of Ancona from 1608 to 1610. In 1609 he was a trainee lawyer at the Courts of Justice of the Apostolic Signature . In 1614 he met as an extraordinary nuncio in Piedmont, where he was in a dispute between King Philip III. of Spain and the Duke of Savoy Charles Emanuel I mediated.
Cardinal and bishop
Pope Paul V accepted him in the consistory of December 2, 1615 as a cardinal priest in the college of cardinals . He received the red hat on December 5, 1615 and Santa Sabina as the titular church on January 11, 1616.
Also on January 11, 1616, Giulio Savelli was elected Bishop of Ancona e Numana . He was ordained bishop on April 10 of the same year in the Roman church of Sant'Andrea in Montecavallo , the predecessor of Sant'Andrea al Quirinale , by Cardinal Scipione Caffarelli Borghese ; Co- consecrators were Archbishop Guido Bentivoglio , Apostolic Nuncio in France, and Antonio Grimani , Bishop of Torcello . On December 2, 1619 Giulio Savelli was legate in Bologna and remained this until October 1621. He took part in the 1621 conclave , which Pope Gregory XV. chose. He gave up the bishopric of Ancona before March 2, 1622. Giulio Savelli was a participant in the 1623 conclave , from which Urban VIII emerged as Pope. From January 7, 1630 to January 8, 1631 he was chamberlain of the Holy College of Cardinals .
Due to the nomination by King Philip IV of Spain , Giulio Savelli was appointed Archbishop of Salerno on January 28, 1630 . On November 10, 1636 he moved to the titular church of Santa Maria in Trastevere . On March 28, 1639 he opted for the cardinal class of cardinal bishops and for the suburbicarian diocese of Frascati . He gave up the Archbishopric of Salerno before September 15, 1642.
Giulio Savelli died in Rome and was buried in a family grave in the Church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli .
