Gboard is an on- screen keyboard from Google Inc. for Android and IOS devices. With over a billion installations in the Google Play Store , they were among the most popular apps for Android.

history

It was first published in May 2016 for iOS and in December for Android, where it replaced the Google Keyboard app. While the iOS version only supported English when it was released, the Android version already had over 100 languages when it was released. In August 2016, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese were added to the iOS app. In addition, design and personalization options have been added and a function has been added to the app that enables gifs to be found and sent to match the text.

In April 2017, 11 Indian languages were added, giving Gboard 22 Indian languages. Additional language variants from other languages were greatly expanded in March 2018. Since June 2017 it has been possible to draw emojis by hand and suggest whole sentences instead of just single words. Offline speech recognition was released in March 2019. In April 2019, Gboard was expanded to include stickers that can also be sent in WhatsApp . In October 2019, up to 916 languages could be selected in the Gboard. Google is currently testing sticker suggestions based on previously selected emojis from the user in the beta phase.

Functions

Since the keyboard was designed for systems with a touchscreen such as a smartphone or tablet , the keys must be easy and quick to type on the smaller area. In order to avoid spelling mistakes and to spell out frequently used words, an integrated auto- correction should help. The words are based on previously entered words by the user and suggestions from Google search . The keyboard also supports sending emojis , stickers and gif files. The language and writing can also be adjusted and the design of the keyboard can be personalized. Texts can also be written manually or with your own dictation software. Further functions are a cache management, an integrated Google search function and an integration with Google Translate . The keyboard can be used with one or two hands and its position and size can be adjusted.
