application

  • In word processing , this function is known as AutoCorrect . At the beginning, auto-text definitions were created for common typing errors or known acronyms from other providers; today's office packages usually already contain the function.
  • System-wide, Autotext functions are made possible by programs such as AutoHotkey , Text Module Management Deluxe, PhraseExpress, AutoIt (Windows), TextExpander (Mac) or AutoKey (Linux). On the Mac, this functionality has also been provided by the operating system since Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 .
  • One of the very first autocorrect programs was Ways for Windows by Hannes Keller .
  • JavaScript can be used on Internet pages to provide the user with autotext.
  • Autocorrection is preinstalled on many instant messaging programs and virtual keyboards on cell phones , smartphones and tablet computers in order to enable faster and more error-free typing .

Problems and side effects

Usually there is no semantic check of the text by the autocorrection software. Therefore, incorrect, incoherent substitute words are sometimes suggested or inserted. If the user inadvertently takes over such a substitute word or does not correct it, it is referred to as the Cupertino effect .
