Silvio Savelli

Silvio Savelli (born July 21, 1550 in Ariccia , † January 22, 1599 ibid) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Savelli was the son of Camillo Savelli, signore di Ariccia , and his wife Isabella Orsini . From the Savelli family came Pope Honorius IV as well as the cardinals Bertrando Savelli , Giovanni Battista Savelli , Giacomo Savelli , Giulio Savelli , Fabrizio Savelli and Paolo Savelli .

After studying law, which he completed with a doctorate , Savelli became papal chamberlain . On October 18, 1578, he was appointed canon of the Vatican Basilica .

Silvio Savelli was appointed Archbishop of Rossano on January 26, 1582 , which he remained until 1589. He was ordained bishop on January 28, 1582 in the Cappella Paolina Giovanni Antonio Fachinetti , Latin (titular) patriarch of Jerusalem ; Co- consecrators were Giovanni Fieschi , former Bishop of Savona , and Alessandro Musotti , Bishop of Imola . From August 1592 to February 1594 he was vice-legate in Avignon.

Since March 28, 1594 Savelli was titular patriarch of Constantinople and was elevated to cardinal by Pope Clement VIII on June 5, 1596 . On June 21, 1596 he became a cardinal priest of the titular church of Santa Maria in Via Lata .

Silvio Savelli died on January 22, 1599 in his birthplace Ariccia of “a sudden illness” ( un'improvviso malore ) and was transferred to Rome, where he was buried in the grave of his ancestors in the church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli .
