Marcello Lante
Marcello Lante , also Marcello Lante della Rovere , (* 1561 in Rome ; † April 19, 1652 ibid) was an Italian clergyman, bishop and cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
He was the third of nine children of Ludovico Lante and his wife Lavinia Maffei, a sister of the Cardinals Bernardino and Marcantonio Maffei , whose nephew he was therefore. His sister Virginia Lante was married to Giovan Battista Borghese, a brother of Pope Paul V. One of his cousins was Cardinal Orazio Maffei . His own nephews Gregorio Naro and Tiberio Cenci later also became cardinals, as did his great-nephews Federico Marcello Lante and two later family members, Alessandro Lante and Antonio Lante . He was related to the Dukes Della Rovere .
Under the pontificate of Clement VIII he became a cleric of the Apostolic Chamber and later its auditor. In the consistory of September 11, 1606, Pope Paul V elevated him to cardinal priest , and on October 9, 1606 he received the titular church Santi Quirico e Giulitta .
Marcello Lante was appointed Bishop of Todi on December 18, 1606 . He received his episcopal ordination on January 14, 1607 in the Vatican Palace, Pope Paul V himself, co- consecrators were the cardinals Ottavio Paravicini and Carlo Conti . He took part in the conclave of 1621 , in which Pope Gregory XV. was elected, and at the 1623 Conclave , from which Urban VIII emerged as Pope. He gave up the bishopric of Todi before October 6, 1625. From January 13, 1625 to January 7, 1626 he was Camerlengo of the College of Cardinals . On March 20, 1628 he moved to the titular church of Santa Prassede .
On August 20, 1629 he became Cardinal Bishop of Palestrina ; on October 8 of the same year he moved to the suburkbikarian seat of Frascati . From March 28, 1639 he held the sub- Urbican diocese of Porto e Santa Rufina , and at the same time he was subdean of the College of Cardinals . On July 1, 1641, he rose to the position of Dean of the College of Cardinals and thus Cardinal Bishop of Ostia e Velletri . As such, he headed the 1644 conclave , which Pope Innocent X elected.
He died in Rome and was buried in the local church of San Nicola da Tolentino agli Orti Sallustiani , in which he had a burial chapel built.
