The White Earth Indian Reservation is an Indian reservation in the US state of Minnesota . It is the largest Indian reservation by area in the state. It covers the entire area of Mahnomen County and parts of Becker County and Clearwater County . The reserve administration is located in White Earth of the same name . The reserve has an area of ​​2,831 km². It is inhabited by Anishinabe Indians and descendants of European immigrants. It is one of seven Anishinabe reservations in Minnesota. According to a 2000 census, the reserve has 9,192 permanent residents. White Earth was founded in Washington on March 19, 1867 after negotiations between the chiefs of the Indian tribe and President Andrew Johnson . In the small town of Mahnomen , the administrative seat of Mahnomen County, the tribe operates the Shooting Star Casino . With over 1,000 employees, it is the largest employer on the reservation and the most important source of financial income. Nevertheless, the unemployment rate is 25%, 50% of the residents are considered poor. This makes the White Earth the poorest Indian reservation in Minnesota.
