Carlo di Ferdinando de 'Medici (born March 19, 1595 in Florence , † June 17, 1666 there ) was an Italian cardinal and bishop .

Life

On December 2, 1615 Pope Paul V accepted the son of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Ferdinando I de 'Medici and Chrétienne de Lorraine as cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry Santa Maria in Domnica in the cardinals college . He was one of the eligible cardinals of the conclaves of 1621 and 1623 , which Gregory XV. and Urban VIII . After the death of Carlo Emmanuele Pio di Savoia in 1623, he became cardinal deacon of San Nicola in Carcere . After the conclave of 1644, he crowned the newly elected Pope Innocent X as cardinal protodeacon on October 4, 1644. On October 17, 1644, he was briefly cardinal deacon of the Church of Sant'Eustachio and on December 12, cardinal priest of San Sisto .

The next year the member of the affluent Medici family became Cardinal Bishop of Sabina and seven months later Cardinal Bishop of Frascati . On April 29, 1652 he was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Porto e Santa Rufina and Subdean of the College of Cardinals . From September 23 of the same year until his death he was Dean of the College of Cardinals and Cardinal Bishop of Ostia e Velletri . He headed the conclave in 1655 and announced the election of Fabio Chigis ( Alexander VII ) as Pope.

Carlo di Ferdinando de 'Medici died in Florence at the age of 71 and was buried in the family crypt in the Basilica di San Lorenzo di Firenze .
