The Castleton State College is a public university in Castleton in the western US state of Vermont . Around 2000 students are enrolled at the university. It is a so-called Liberal Arts College . The college is part of the Vermont State Colleges network .

history

Old Chapel , the oldest building on campus, was built in 1821

The university was founded in 1787 on the initiative of the Vermont General Assembly and is the fifth oldest university in New England after Harvard University (1636), Yale University (1701), Brown University (1764) and Dartmouth College (1769) . In 1867 the college responsible for teacher training was renamed State Normal School . In 1947 it was again renamed Castleton Teachers College . In 1962 she finally joined the Vermont State Colleges , the name Castleton State College provided. July 23, 2015 has become Castleton University .

Sports

The university's sports teams call themselves the Spartans . Castle State College is a member of the North Atlantic Conference and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). Starting in 2009, the college will also have a football team.
